Cockroach Control in Beirut, Lebanon

We identify the species before we treat, because a German cockroach and an American cockroach need completely different work

German or American? The Identification Changes the Whole Treatment

Cockroaches out in the open are the crowded edge of a population sitting in voids nobody opens. The inspection settles which species is present and where the harbourage sits. A German infestation lives inside the kitchen itself, while an American cockroach walks in from drains and shared risers, so treating the kitchen alone changes little.

The species decides where the work happens

The German cockroach

A German cockroach is the length of a fingernail, pale tan, with a pair of dark bars on the plate behind its head, and it lives indoors. The female keeps her egg case attached to her body until shortly before the nymphs emerge, so clearing the adults on show leaves the next generation to hatch out of the motor housing behind the fridge.

The American cockroach

The American is long, glossy and reddish, and rarely breeds inside a flat, arriving from drains, sewers, basements and the risers between floors. Sealing pipe penetrations and keeping gullies trapped do more than any product on a worktop.

How pest control licensing works in Lebanon

Household pest control in Lebanon is licensed by the Ministry of Public Health, through the Directorate of Health Prevention and its Sanitary Engineering Service, with the technical conditions set by Decree 5100 of 12 April 1982. Agricultural pesticides sit under the Ministry of Agriculture, and the two licences are not interchangeable. Lebanon keeps no public register of licensed operators, so a customer can only ask which ministry issued the licence and ask to see the certificate. Aluminium and zinc phosphide are banned for pest control in residential and populated areas nationwide. More in how pest control licensing works in Lebanon.

What keeps cockroach pressure high in Lebanese buildings

Roughly 40,000 buildings were damaged in the port blast, and blocks still carrying that damage around Medawar, Mar Mikhael, Gemmayzeh and Karantina hold open voids and long-empty flats where a population feeds undisturbed and reaches occupied units through the shared riser. Collection suspensions recur across Beirut, Metn and Keserwan, and the Jdeideh landfill is at capacity, its last expansion cell buying time only to the end of 2026, so bin rooms and back stairs stay loaded. Pressure here tracks the collection calendar more closely than the season, as does rodent activity in the same buildings.

What spraying does to a kitchen population

A residual pyrethroid on an open surface repels German cockroaches, so a population sitting in two or three cupboards scatters into the wall voids and the flat next door. Gel bait works with the way they feed and groom each other, carrying the active ingredient into the harbourage and reaching nymphs that never came out, with a growth regulator to stop survivors developing.

How the work runs

1. Inspection

The technician opens the kitchen and bathroom voids, checks the drains, floor gullies, bin area and riser access, and confirms the species before anything is applied.

2. Treatment

Gel bait goes into the voids rather than onto open surfaces. Where American cockroaches are the problem, the work moves out to drains, ducts, basements and bin areas.

3. Follow-up

A return visit is timed to the hatch, because egg cases laid before the first treatment are shielded from anything applied to the adults.

Proofing

Gaps that can be closed on the day are sealed, and the ones needing a builder or the building’s maintenance are written down for you.

Before and after the visit

Do not spray anything first, because a supermarket aerosol scatters the population and leaves a repellent film that turns the gel into something to avoid. Clear food and dishes, open access under the sink and behind the fridge, and afterwards leave the treated points alone.

Restaurants, shops and food premises

Warmth and constant food let a German population build faster than in a home, and much of the harbourage sits inside the equipment, in the motor spaces of fridges and dishwashers. Work is planned around closing hours, and drains, grease traps and the bin area are treated as part of the job.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Gel goes inside cupboard voids, behind appliances and down into cracks, where a child or a cat cannot reach it. Mention asthma or a pregnancy when booking.

The bait draws them out. Insects sheltering in the voids come out to feed, so activity can rise for a few nights before it falls.

For gel baiting in a kitchen, no. Where a basement or bin room gets a residual product, you are told which areas to keep clear and for how long.

Floors, counters and the sink carry on as usual. Keep bleach, degreaser and steam off the points where gel was placed, since scrubbing removes the bait.

An initial treatment and a follow-up timed to the hatch. A restaurant kitchen in constant use, or a building with several affected units, needs more.

A shared riser, a common bin room or an empty flat on another floor keeps re-supplying a treated kitchen, so drains, ducts and riser access are inspected too.
