Bed bugs arrive on luggage, in second-hand furniture or through a shared wall, and settle within a couple of metres of where someone sleeps. They do not forage the way cockroaches do, so an infestation has a centre, and finding it is most of the work.
Reinfestation usually traces back to a harbourage nobody opened, or to eggs already cemented into a seam on the first day, since no single application reaches every one of them. That is why a second visit is planned from the start.
Two species feed on people, Cimex lectularius and the tropical Cimex hemipterus. No published survey records which is more common in Lebanon, and both are treated the same way.
Fleas bite around the ankles and usually mean an animal in the building. Bed bugs leave dark spotting along a mattress seam, shed skins in the piping and, in an established room, eggs and nymphs of several sizes beside the adults, which means the population has bred in place and widens the inspection to the rooms either side.
A bedroom here stays inside the temperature range bed bugs breed in all year, so a problem that starts in February is no smaller by June.
Beirut is dense, flats share walls and service risers, and bed bugs move along the gaps that pipes and conduit pass through. The port blast damaged roughly 40,000 buildings, concentrated in Medawar, Mar Mikhael, Gemmayzeh and Karantina, and cracked plaster with lifted skirting holds a population that sound walls would not. An empty flat is no safer, since a bed bug survives months between meals.
Pest control in homes and other premises is licensed by the Ministry of Public Health, through the Directorate of Health Prevention and its Sanitary Engineering Service, under technical conditions set by Decree 5100 of 12 April 1982. Agricultural pesticides sit on a separate track under the Ministry of Agriculture, and the two licences are not interchangeable. No public register of licensed companies exists here, so the only check available is to ask for the certificate and read which ministry issued it.
The Ministry of Public Health has banned aluminium and zinc phosphide for pest control in residential and populated areas nationwide. A home should never be treated with an agricultural fumigant. There is more on how pest control licensing works in Lebanon.
Steam and a fine-filter vacuum do the work on the bed itself, the one surface where a residual product has no business. Heat kills every stage on contact, eggs included, and the vacuum lifts live bugs, shed skins and faecal spotting out of the seams and piping.
A general spray of the room is worse than doing nothing: bed bugs sit in tight aggregations, and a knockdown product applied broadly drives the survivors into wall voids and along the riser toward the next flat. Pyrethroid resistance, documented in bed bug populations across Europe and North America, is the second reason: one spray of a single active ingredient leaves a room looking treated while the population carries on.
It stays in the house. Carrying an infested mattress down the stairwell drops bugs in the corridor and within reach of your neighbours, and the replacement arrives in a room not yet treated. The seams, the piping and the underside of the box spring hold most of the population, which steam and a vacuum clear.
A second visit is standard, and the eggs are the reason. A female cements them into a seam or a crack, so whatever is present on the first day hatches afterwards, at room temperature in roughly a week to ten days and longer in an unheated flat in upper Metn or above Jounieh.
A newly hatched bug feeds and moults five times over several weeks before it can lay eggs of its own. The second visit lands inside that window, and belongs to the job you booked rather than to a separate call-out.
The technician works through the room with the bed stripped: mattress seams and piping, inside the box spring, the joints of a wooden frame, the back of the headboard, the skirting and the hem of any curtain touching the floor. Adjoining rooms and the sofa are checked too.
Steam and vacuuming clear the bed and the soft furnishings, then a low-odour residual goes into crevices, frame joints and skirting at the rate on the label. The technician records what was used, where and at what concentration, so the next visit adjusts rather than guesses.
The room is re-inspected against the notes from day one, and any harbourage missed or newly occupied is treated. Bites continuing in between change where that visit concentrates.
Go back to sleeping in your own bed the same night, because bed bugs follow body heat and exhaled carbon dioxide and an empty bedroom pushes them toward whoever has moved onto the sofa. Leave the treated crevices and skirting unwashed, keep the bagged laundry sealed until the follow-up visit, and note where and when new bites appear.
Nothing is applied to a sleeping surface, the sheets or the open floor where a child crawls. The products are low-odour formulations chosen for occupied rooms rather than for strength. The room goes back into normal use once the treated surfaces have dried and it has been aired, which the technician times on the day.
Fish tanks and bird cages need covering, and a reptile is better off in another room.
Where guests change every few days, the room that gets reported is seldom the only one holding bed bugs. They move along the skirting runs and service penetrations connecting one room to the next, so the rooms either side and those above and below are inspected too, along with any store holding luggage or linen. In staff accommodation and long-stay flats the same bedding stays in use for months.
Housekeeping that checks the mattress piping, the back of the headboard and the underside of the luggage rack at every changeover catches a problem while it is still in one room. Visits are timed so that guests have no reason to notice them.

No. An infested mattress sheds bugs in the corridor on the way down, and the new one arrives in a room not yet treated. Steam and a fine-filter vacuum clear the seams and piping.
At least two. The first deals with the live population, the second with the eggs that hatch afterwards, roughly a week to ten days later in a warm room and longer in a cold one.
Yes, once the treated surfaces have dried and the room has been aired. Nothing goes onto the sleeping surface, the sheets or the open floor. Cover a fish tank or bird cage, and mention pregnancy or asthma when you book.
You stay out of the rooms being treated while the work is done and the surfaces dry, not out of the building, and the technician says on the day when the room can go back into normal use. Then sleep in your own bed.
Better not. Shop-bought aerosols knock down what you can see and scatter the rest into wall voids and along the skirting toward the next flat. Strip the beds, wash the linen hot and leave the furniture alone.
It is not about cleanliness. Bed bugs are carried in on luggage and clothing, in second-hand furniture, and through shared walls and risers from a neighbouring flat. They feed on blood, so a spotless bedroom suits them as well as any other.
