The line of ants crossing a kitchen counter is the colony’s supply route, and the nest sits out of sight. Spraying the line changes little, since nothing on a worktop reaches the queen and the workers are replaced within days.
Which ant you have changes what goes down
Identification comes from behaviour and nest position, not from a specimen. The indoor type is small and pale, nests in warm dry voids near pipework and splits under pressure. The outdoor type is larger and darker, nests in soil or under paving and trails in through window frames.
Debris pushed out of damp roof timber reads as termite damage, and fine pellets rather than shavings point to termite control instead.
Where the nest sits in a Lebanese building
Trails show in kitchens and bathrooms because that is where the water is, but the nest sits a metre or two away, in plaster kept damp by a slow leak.
Ground floor flats have a second source in the soil around planters, and in a block the nest can sit in the courtyard or a neighbouring flat, with trails running through the service shafts, so treating one kitchen buys a few quiet weeks. Where the building committee agrees, the whole building is treated under a general pest control programme.
When collection is suspended in Beirut, Metn or Keserwan and bags stand at the entrance for days, pressure on the lower floors climbs the same week.
How pest control licensing works in Lebanon
Household pest control in Lebanon is licensed by the Ministry of Public Health, through the Directorate of Health Prevention and its Sanitary Engineering Service, and the technical conditions come from Decree 5100 of 12 April 1982. Agricultural pesticide work sits with the Ministry of Agriculture on a separate track, and the two licences are not interchangeable.
The Ministry of Public Health has banned aluminium and zinc phosphide for pest control in residential and populated areas nationwide.
Lebanon keeps no public register of licensed companies, so the only check is to ask to see the certificate and read which ministry issued it.
Why the colony is baited and the trail is left alone
A household spray kills the workers it lands on and leaves a repellent film, so the colony routes around the treated surface and some species bud.
Gel bait goes down instead, in small deposits along the runs the ants already use. The workers carry it back through the colony, so the trail thins over the following days.
What you do around the visit matters:
- Leave the trail alone, since it is the map to the nest.
- Clear the counter, lift pet bowls and empty the kitchen bin.
- Say where a cat, a dog or a crawling baby spends its time.
How an ant visit runs
1. Tracing the trail
The technician follows the active line back from where you noticed it until it is clear whether the colony is inside or outside the building.
2. Baiting and outside treatment
Deposits go into the runs indoors, matched to what the colony is feeding on, while outdoors the crossing surfaces and the nest entrance are treated. Any area to keep children and animals off is named first.
3. Sealing and the return visit
Pipe entries and balcony joints are closed with sealant and mesh. Where the nest sits outside the flat, a return visit tops up the bait.
Ants in a kitchen, a shop or a warehouse
In commercial premises the ants work the drain runs under the equipment, the dry store and the bin enclosure. Deposits go into service voids and pipe entries, never where food is handled. Premises that serve or store food come under their own inspection rules.
