General Pest Control in Lebanon

One visit that covers the pests a Lebanese home or workplace actually gets

What One General Pest Control Visit Covers

A general pest control visit handles the common household pests in one appointment: cockroaches, ants, silverfish, spiders, mice and rats, and the flies and mosquitoes that come with them. They rarely arrive alone, so a kitchen with German cockroaches usually has an ant trail too.

What the visit covers

Cockroaches usually decide the plan, so the species is identified first. German cockroaches are small, live in the warm parts of a kitchen and breed inside the room, and they are baited rather than sprayed, because a pyrethroid spray scatters them into wall voids and cabinet carcasses where nothing reaches them afterwards. American cockroaches come up from drains, manholes and the service shaft, so that work goes to drain covers, floor gullies and the gaps around pipework. More on the cockroach control page.

Ants are traced back towards the nest and baited so the workers carry the treatment home. Wiping the trail off the counter only clears it for a few days.

Rodents need separate attention, because Lebanon has a documented resistance problem. A 2022 study in Scientific Reports sequenced rats and mice caught in Lebanon and found 58.3% of house mice carrying mutations linked to Vkorc1 anticoagulant resistance. That is why supermarket bait often does nothing: the mice eat it and carry on. Trapping and closing entry points do more of the work, and the active ingredient is rotated rather than repeated. The rodent control page has the method.

Mosquito work is about water more than about spraying air. Aedes albopictus, the tiger mosquito that bites during the day, is established along the humid western slope up to roughly 1,000 metres and is absent from the arid inland, including the Bekaa. Its season runs from late April into December, peaking in July and again in late September and early October. The breeding site is nearly always stored water, the norm since the public supply collapsed: the roof tank, the balcony bucket, the air conditioner drip tray. Local populations showed only 25.33% mortality against malathion but full susceptibility to pyrethroids, so blanket malathion fogging is the wrong tool here.

Fly pressure follows the rubbish calendar more than the season. When collection is suspended in Beirut, Metn or Keserwan the bin room becomes the whole problem, and the answer is bin hygiene, cleaning the organic film inside drains where small flies breed, and treating the surfaces flies rest on.

What happens on the visit

The inspection

The technician walks the building before anything is opened: the kitchen cabinets and the space behind the fridge and the oven, the bathroom and balcony drains, the service shaft, the roof tank, the drip tray under the air conditioner, and the bin store downstairs.

What the walk finds sets the treatment. Droppings and gnaw marks mean rodents, shed skins and dark specks in a hinge mean German cockroaches, and standing water means the mosquitoes are bred on the property. In older buildings, and in the flats damaged around Medawar, Mar Mikhael, Gemmayzeh and Karantina, cracked structure and a long-empty apartment next door are often the harbourage feeding everything else.

The treatment

Gel goes inside hinges, behind appliances and in the cracks nobody opens, so it sits where cockroaches travel and away from where you cook. Ant nests are baited. Rodents get traps and proofing alongside bait. Drains and gullies are cleaned for small flies. Mosquito work goes to the stored water and the shaded resting surfaces.

Prevention and the follow up

Before leaving, the technician goes through what is bringing the pests in and what you can change yourself: a lid on the roof tank and the other stored water covered, the air conditioner drip tray emptied, mesh over the floor gullies, water kept in the traps under the sinks, the gap under the entrance door and the kitchen pipe penetrations closed, and bins shut and rinsed through the weeks when collection is suspended.

The follow up is timed to the pest rather than to a fixed schedule, so the return visit deals with eggs and nests before they hatch. Where the conditions that drew the pests in are left as they were, the same population usually builds back within a season.

How pest control is licensed in Lebanon

Household pest control in Lebanon is licensed by the Ministry of Public Health, through the Directorate of Health Prevention, with the technical conditions set by Decree 5100 of 12 April 1982. Agricultural pesticides sit under the Ministry of Agriculture on a separate licence, and the two are not interchangeable.

That distinction matters inside a home. The Ministry of Public Health has banned aluminium and zinc phosphide for pest control in residential and populated areas nationwide.

There is no public register of licensed companies in Lebanon, so a customer cannot look one up, and the only check is to ask which ministry issued the licence and to see the certificate. How licensing works in Lebanon covers the rules in full, including those for food premises.

Tell us the pest you are seeing, which floor you are on, the area you are in, and whether there are children or pets in the home. That is usually enough for us to say what the visit will involve before anyone comes out.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, when the treatment is chosen for a home rather than borrowed from farming. Gel baits go inside cabinet hinges, behind the fridge and into cracks children and animals cannot reach. Say beforehand if there is a baby, a pregnant woman, someone with asthma or a pet in the flat, because it changes the product and where it goes. A home should never be treated with an agricultural fumigant: aluminium and zinc phosphide were banned nationwide for pest control in residential and populated areas.

For a normal flat treated with baits and targeted application you do not need to leave. The length depends on the size of the property and how many rooms are involved. Where a room is sprayed, stay out of it while it dries, ventilate it afterwards, and wipe the surfaces the technician points out, food preparation surfaces above all.

Clear access and leave the evidence where it is. Empty the cabinets under the sink and around the cooker so the corners can be reached. Do not spray anything yourself beforehand: supermarket sprays push German cockroaches deeper into the wall voids and can make them avoid the bait. Leave droppings and trails unwashed, since they show where the population lives, and if mosquitoes are the problem leave the roof tank, the balcony containers and the drip tray as they are.

The pest decides. Cockroach baiting normally needs a return visit once the nymphs still inside the egg cases have hatched and fed, because nothing applied on day one reaches an unhatched egg. Rodent work is revisited while the traps and bait points are in place, since that is when you find out whether the entry points were properly closed. Restaurants and food shops usually suit a repeating cycle rather than single visits.
