Pigeons come back to a balcony because the ledge suits them, so a plastic owl or gel holds only a few weeks.
What ends it is closing the perch physically, with netting, spikes and tensioned wire. Old nests also carry bird mites, which move indoors and cause bites blamed on bed bugs.
Where pigeons settle on a Lebanese building
Recessed balconies come first, and flats left empty for part of the year are the worst affected. On a shop or a restaurant it is the loading bay canopy and the roof plant, and the fouling comes off the ground and the machinery too.
Roof tanks, solar panels and air-conditioning brackets
Rooftop water tanks give a pigeon the covered, undisturbed gap it looks for. Split air-conditioning brackets are the other favourite, warmed by the unit.
What the droppings do to the building
Droppings are acidic and go after paint, aluminium frames and tank sealant, and they block roof drains, so winter rain backs up into a ceiling. Dried droppings are a respiratory risk once disturbed.
Proofing rather than repelling
Netting closes a volume, so it suits a recessed balcony or the cavity behind a sign, tensioned on a perimeter wire with a mesh that stops pigeons without catching smaller birds. Spikes close lines instead, blunt ones that remove the landing surface rather than injuring the bird.
Where a spike cannot be fixed, a tensioned wire makes the perch unstable, and an air-conditioning bracket gets a mesh frame that lets the condenser breathe. We use no poison and no sticky gel, and an active nest with eggs or chicks stays until the chicks have fledged.
How pest control is licensed in Lebanon
Household pest control in Lebanon is licensed by the Ministry of Public Health, through the Directorate of Health Prevention and its Sanitary Engineering Service, under Decree 5100 of 12 April 1982. Agricultural pesticides run separately under the Ministry of Agriculture, and the two licences are not interchangeable. Lebanon keeps no public register, so proof means asking which ministry licensed a company and seeing the certificate.
The Ministry of Public Health has banned aluminium and zinc phosphide for pest control in residential and populated areas nationwide.
How a bird job runs
1. Survey
The survey separates perching from nesting surfaces, since they do not take the same fitting.
2. Clearing and disinfection
Droppings and nest material come off wet, never dry-swept, with protective equipment, and the surface is disinfected and dried before anything is fixed.
3. Installation and the follow-up visit
Netting, spikes or wire go up once the area is dry, and a follow-up visit checks the fixings.
